Jumping Into a New Car Lease

We’re picking up a new car today. I turned in our previous leased vehicle yesterday. In preparation for that event, I cleaned out the glove box. Curiously enough, I found absolutely no gloves in the glove box. I did find my missing earbuds, lots of straws, 20 bucks, and this …

Tork Talk Redux

I couldn’t quite figure out why Peter Tork’s death affected me so much yesterday. Then a friend hit the nail right on the head for me.

Mite Be Funny – RIP Peter Tork Edition

This special Mite Be Funny will not be funny, although that could be said for most all the Mite Be Funny cartoons. I am saddened at the passing of Peter Tork of the Monkees. I actually shed a tear or two typing this homage.

I was a bit too young to have been swept up in the original Monkeemania, but as I grew older, I came to appreciate the Monkees for what they were – a fun band. Peter Tork played the ‘dumb’ Monkee on their TV show, but he was a brilliant musician, certainly the most musically-gifted and trained of the four.

Peter tork

Don’t mention it, Pete. He got the role in the Monkees after his buddy, Stephen Stills, was rejected. If Stephen Stills had been chosen to be a Monkee, might we have gotten Crosby, Tork & Nash?

New Music for Old Rockers – Welcome Back Edition

My NMFOR posts have so far focused on newer musical talents. Not in this post. These are established talents that are finally providing us some welcome new music.

First up is Vampire Weekend. Six years since their last record. How does it take so long to make a record album? C’mon, you’re musicians. Make more music.

Father of the Bride is their upcoming release this Spring, and Harmony Hall is a single released from that album. I’m not sure that Harmony Hall is worth a six year wait, but it is a great tune. Take a listen.

Welcome back Vampires. Harmony Hall definitely doesn’t suck.

What does is the new single called Salvation from the Strumbellas.

Unpresidented

I thought a lot about President’s Day yesterday. I drove from Chicago down to St. Louis, and passed through Lincoln, Illinois as well as Springfield, Illinois where a young Abraham Lincoln lived and worked as an Illinois state legislator. I think Lincoln shed a few tears yesterday because of a tweet. Surprisingly, it was not a tweet from Donald Trump. No, this tweet came from Honest Abe’s own Republican party. Take a look …

Puff, the Magic Fish

I just read that dolphins get high when they manhandle puffer fish.

It turns out that puffer fish emit a toxin when jostled as a defense mechanism. Dolphins have been observed messing with puffer fish seemingly in an attempt to get the puffer fish to emit just enough toxin to give the dolphins a nice buzz.

I wonder if they do that on porpoise?

Surviving Day 2 of a National Emergency

Donald Trump sought refuge at what appears to be a very crappy omelet bar at Mar-a-Lago as the United States bravely somehow made it through Day 2 of our national emergency of not having a big wall that Mexico refuses to pay for.

Trump made good use of his Eggsecutive Time to decide if he wanted ketchup on his omelet or not. Two bottles of ketchup at the Mar-a-Lago omelet bar. Classy.

But something is amiss in that picture. Take a another look.

Time Monopolizer

Ugh. It is that time of the year again. The local grocery is encouraging us to play their Monopoly game again, the biggest time waster I have ever encountered. Sure, we have won every year, about a net $25 worth of gift cards + free products for about 100 hours of work. It is so much work that when it ended last year, I filed for unemployment benefits. Denied.

I had initially resisted the Monopoly game’s siren song this year. I actually passed on taking tickets after checkout. I was a reformed man. Then my wife came home with this stack.

Monopoly stack

Thanks a lot to my wife for enabling my filthy habit. As I spread the game tickets out on my bed and rolled back and forth over them, I casually grabbed one. It wasn’t long before it was open, and what did I see?

Your Righting All Wrong

As I continue to write more short stories, I have a cousin who is editing them. She has been a professional editor for decades. I know …

lucky

I am, but not just because she is editing for free. She’s always been like a big sister to me.

aw Aw, right?

I guess that’s why I got her a pair of Fancy Bitch socks for Christmas.

fancy bitch

She’s got a bit of an edge to her, so she loves them. In turn, she just sent me a book. I think the gift is a not-so-subtle tip to use better grammar when writing. If you are serious about becoming a better writer, GET. THIS. BOOK. Oh, sorry, my caps lock and period keys sometimes get stuck due to peanut butter in the keyboard. Here’s the book …

New Music for Old Rockers – Morgxn Edition

No, I didn’t ignore spellcheck. The new music artist in this post is actually Morgan Karr, but he goes professionally by the name Morgxn or morgxn. He’s not actually a young guy as he’s on the wrong side of 30, but he’s pretty new to the music biz. He went from his home in Nashville to NY to act, and then out to LA to be a musician. He just put out his first album in the middle of 2018. It did as well as his acting career. It didn’t chart. But this single Home featuring Walk The Moon has charted and is fabulous. Take a listen. Skip to the 1 minute mark if you want to skip the weird video intro to get right to the weird music video. Continue reading “New Music for Old Rockers – Morgxn Edition”

A Good Day For Trump Bashing

Today feels to me like a good day to bash Donald Trump. I don’t very often feel bad about making fun of Trump. He is a heinous individual. Really sub-human in a cretinous sort of way. Hey, even the dictionary tells me he is a worthless cheat.

trumpery definition

The person who summed up best how I feel is the Make Anagrams Great Again guy on Twitter, Chris Davis @tweakyourpc with this acrostic poem.

anagram trump name.gif

Wow, that really nails my feelings for Trump. But then I do sometimes feel bad if I take a cheap shot at him about something he can’t help, like his tiny hands. In my recent Flies On Washington Walls SOTU address preview, I had the flies predict there would be more of this type of two-fisted drinking.

An Open Letter to American Employers

Dear American Employers,

I am writing to you to ask that you please excuse any hungover employees today. They are likely hungover due to watching Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. They probably played a drinking game associated with the Trump SOTU address, possibly a drink every time Trump sniffed or made a partisan comment. And really, drinking was the only way to get through that whole speech of his. Please cut the hungover drunks some slack today. They are patriots and were just doing their civic duty.

Resistingly yours,

Jim Flanigan

Hot or Not?

Last week we bottomed out at -28F (-33C) and today we topped out at 46F (almost 8C). The heat has been welcomed back by all, except for some snow sculptures that are leaning more toward providing only flaccid support for the return of warmer-than-normal temps.
