First Democratic Debate Rocks Polls

In the wake of the first debate between the Democratic primary candidates, the polls reflect some significant changes and a new contender. Not too much changed at the top as Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders still lead the polls. Clinton polls extremely well with those wearing pants suits, getting approval from over 95% of that demographic. Sanders earned high marks from the “no original teeth” demographic, especially in the Northern states. Those in that demographic polled did complain that the debate was on too late, it conflicted with Matlock reruns, and the mashed potatoes at dinner were too lumpy. Sanders did not do so well in the “no original teeth” demographic in the South where that demographic cuts across all age groups.

Despite his absence at the debate, Joe Biden remains strong in the polls at about 20%. Most polled thought Biden made no mistakes at the debate and held his own.

Making a surprise appearance in the polls is Joe Biden’s empty podium now polling at 10%. CNN had an empty podium ready for Biden if he chose to participate, and his empty podium elicited a more positive response than other debate participants Martin O’Malley, Jim Webb & Lincoln Chafee.

Jim Webb

Jim Webb’s angry face, support of Second Amendment rights, and constant complaining appealed to Republicans polled. Most polled felt he would be a good fit at the next Republican debate.

Martin O’Malley supporters were disappointed that O’Malley failed to make an appearance at the debate.

Dropping in the polls post-debate was Lincoln Chafee. Prior to the debate, Chafee was polling at 1 to 2%. After the debate where he struggled with the basics of sentence structure and begged Anderson Cooper for mercy, Chafee is now polling at -3%. This is the first time that any candidate has ever polled negatively.
