A Reason to Love Chicago

I am grateful for living my life in the Chicagoland area for many reasons. Winter weather is not one. However, one reason is that we have Lake Michigan, a huge body of water to enjoy, with zero sharks. Take that, ocean lovers! But another is that Chicago is politically cool, sometimes in subtle ways. I was listening this morning to WXRT, still the world’s greatest radio station that you can listen to at wxrt.radio.com, and the big news they reported at 8AM was Trump’s stop in Chicago today where massive protests are expected to cause major traffic disruptions. I would be there except I am preparing to protest a local issue tonight. Anyway, the Trump visit news was followed by this set of music.

  • American Idiot by Green Day
  • Fighter by Joseph
  • Creep by Radiohead
  • Immigration Man by Crosby & Nash
  • Is She Really Going Out With Him by Joe Jackson

When I tweeted the DJ to ask if he was making a political statement, he replied that he was just “rockin’ Chicago.” Sure. Keep rockin’, man.

Reunite & ICE

We had a genuine, official MoveOn Families Belong Together rally in our sleepy little Chicago suburb today. Can you guess which sign I made?

If you chose the crappy looking one on the right that you thought may have taken me 5 minutes to make, award yourself 10 points. But then deduct 5 points because it really took me only 3 minutes.

The rally was so close to our house that we could have walked. It was bloody hot and humid today, so we drove. However, there were many more people at the rally than expected, and I had to park so far away that it may have been closer walking from home.

People were on every corner of a major intersection in our town holding their colorfully decorated and clever, or crappy in my case, signs. I think this was my favorite sign, although not from our rally.

This Road Trip Feels Different

I am heading back on the road today, this time for business. As I pack, this trip feels different. I will no longer be travelling through the “land of the free and home of the brave” according to the Star-Spangled Banner. We now keep migrant children in cages, and Trump supporters fear them. Woody Guthrie wrote “This land is your land, this land is my land,” but that no longer applies. Thanks to the Trump Muslim ban being upheld by the Supreme Court, this land is not a land for Muslims any longer.

Will I do anything different this trip?

I Made a Fashion Faux Pax

I could utter this blog post title every day of my life when I get dressed. My fashion style has been often been described as “homeless chic.” I think I’m the only person in the world to make Steve Bannon appear to have fashion sense. It should come as no surprise when I explain to you that my latest fashion purchase appears to be a huge mistake.

Another Edition of “Am I a Bad Guy?”

I play the “Am I a Bad Guy?” game a lot.

  • Am I a bad guy for taking the last of the (insert favorite food here) from the pantry or refrigerator?

  • Am I a bad guy for not paying my car insurance bills on time, waiting until I get a “last notice before cancellation” letter in the mail simply because I think rates are too high?

  • Part 1: Am I a bad guy for yelling at the dog who dropped a load in the house even though I know I should have taken him out hours ago? Part 2: Am I a bad guy for moving to another room in the house, pretending I don’t see the load, hoping my wife will see it and take care of it?

  • Am I a bad guy for not raking leaves in the fall and hoping a windy day will blow my yard’s leaves into a neighbor’s yard?

Sadly, I could go on and on with examples of this game I play. I’m now playing the game again, but this time YOUR life could depend upon my answer.
