It appears that Starbucks will offer a compromise to quell the hue & cry resulting from their plain red holiday cups this season. Starbucks will now offer optional holiday patterns on the red cups as they have in years past, but at a premium price. For an additional $1 per cup, Starbucks customers can choose a cup with a premium holiday pattern on it. The additional $1 will be donated. A Starbucks spokesperson explained: “We had excess inventory of old cups from past years just gathering dust, so by using them we figured we could satisfy the public demand for designs on our holiday cups while also raising money that will be donated.” When pressed for details regarding the donation, the spokesperson clarified: “100% of all funds generated by the sale of premium design holiday cups will be donated to the Starbucks corporate coffers. In the holiday spirit, this will generate goodwill with Starbucks shareholders and corporate management, and that should result in goodwill trickling down to the general public.”
