New Music for Old Rockers – A Superhero’s Decision

The pantheon of greatest male rock voices which includes such names as Presley, Orbison, Plant, Perry, Daltrey, and Mercury may someday need to make room for Chicago’s own Wes Leavins. Leavins is the lead vocalist for local band Brigitte Calls Me Baby. Take a listen to “Impressively Average” and I think you will hear vocals that are impressively well above average and trending toward outstanding.

I had a great opportunity to see Brigitte Calls Me Baby this week at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago opening for the UK’s The Last Dinner Party. I seem to recall a free ticket giveaway from radio station @93XRT. I declined to enter. I know I could have talked my oldest son into attending the concert with me. Tickets were priced at under $20 each. But I never asked my son or purchased even one ticket. It turns out that those were quite fortuitous decisions.

I tested positive today for COVID, 2 days before the concert for which I never got tickets. My symptoms had started Saturday, and I sought medical assistance today(Tuesday) to be tested for flu, strep throat, and COVID. I’ve been prescribed Paxlovid and other drugs to ease the rage of COVID inside my old body as I quarantine until Friday … the day after the concert by Brigette Calls Me Baby and The Last Dinner Party. Being based in Chicago, I’m hoping I get to see Brigitte Calls Me Baby opening another show in the area in the near future.

Am I a superhero with the power of premonition? What other explanation can there possibly be? And how did a superhero like me get stuck with such a lame power? That power is barely above being able to do long division in your head.

Regardless of the lameness of my superhero power, I am using it again. Fee Waybill and The Tubes are coming to my little hometown to reprise such hits in concert as “She’s a Beauty” and “White Punks on Dope,” among others. My wife has given me the green light to take a step back in time to see the show later this month. My superhero power of premonition, along with a quick check of ticket sales, tells me that there may be a free Tubes ticket giveaway soon to ensure a fuller house. We’ll see if my superhero power comes through for me with a free ticket.

I know by now you’re in agreement that my superhero power is incredibly lame. I may not be saving any lives with my superhero power, but it may save me $39 for a ticket.

As a final display of my superhero power, I predict that this blog post will end abruptly.
