Musical Asian Dogs

About this time of the year, I’m getting emails about all sorts of summer concert announcements. This one caught my eye.

Not so much for Three Dog Night, but the supergroup Asia sounds interesting. But who is this John Payne? He wasn’t in Asia, was he? And with that question, I found myself down a rabbit hole chasing musical dogs in Asia (featuring John Payne). Come join me.

I seemed to recall that Asia featured these rock stalwarts.

Powerful line-up for sure. But now, Asia features this guy.

Ah, the old spin-off group that is named Asia featuring John Payne which will not cause any confusion whatsoever and contains none of the original members of Asia.

I guess that’s why they’re not the headliners. Three Dog Night is. This is my favorite Three Dog Night song.

I always found the term “breathin’ air” to be an odd phrase in the lyrics. I think “clean air” fits better. Surprisingly, nobody asked me for my opinion during the songwriting sessions. Anyway, Three Dog Night originally featured the vocal stylings of these 3 guys.

Those were the 3 main “Dogs,” but there were more band members in their heyday.

I wondered how many members of that original line-up were still touring with the band.

Gulp. Unless their tour bus is outfitted with some sophisticated cryogenic technology, the original line-up is down to Danny Hutton. Shouldn’t he be touring as One Dog Night? Well, it turns out he found himself a couple new “Dogs,” and here they are two years ago performing that same song.

More like Three Senior Dog Night, but at least they still have good rockstar hair which is more than I can say. Oh, and they also sell concert tickets, which is another thing I don’t do.

I likely will not be buying tickets to this show, but I may stop by on the other side of the river like I did for a few concerts last year to hear and semi-see their show. It may be a nice evening out in the country to listen to “Out In The Country.”
