Winter should be a great time to write. For me, winter is also a time for me to be seasonally depressed, so my writing does not flow nicely like pus from a lanced boil. That’s more of how I feel in the winter – like a lanced boil. It doesn’t help that we just had our first snowfall of substance this weekend, and there’s more snow forecasted on the way this week. Gross.

So, I thought I’d force my writing hand by looking for writing contests with deadlines coming up soon. There are plenty, but most seemed to require more effort than I am willing to give. That resolution I made to relaunch my writing career may be more difficult than I thought.

Then I found this writing contest …

Click this link for full contest details. I’ve written and submitted micro-fiction before to contests without much success. But I’m not looking for a win, although I sure could use one of those ten buck honorable mention awards.

It turns out that I was all backed-up with words. This contest was exactly the writing enema I needed. I churned out three rough draft stories in one evening. Two are humorous and involve an extraterrestrial and a courtroom. With a prompt of Evidence, how many stories submitted will be set in a courtroom? Seems obvious, but I had an idea for a giggle, so why not? My third story is a serious one about a relationship on the rocks.

In addition, I wrote this post, and I have ideas for two more. I’m not sure if that’s good for you readers or not. But if you need a little extra push to write, try the storytwigs contest. It’s free and a good way to get some words and ideas on a screen. Maybe one of your micro-stories can be expanded into a short story or that novel that you always wanted to write. Regardless, ready … set … write … stop at 100 words!

  1. Did you hear back about your submission to StoryTwigs? I submitted to the January contest and have heard no response. The contest was to be monthly but there’s been no prompt for February or March.
