A statement issued by the National Rifle Association in the wake of the stabbing attack at the UC Merced campus decried the use of a knife in the attack. “The State of California has some of the strictest gun control laws in this country. The recent University of California Merced knife stabbing spree resulted only in injuries remedied with stitches. If the assailant had been patient and followed California’s oppressive rules and guidelines for obtaining a gun, the planned massacre could have resulted in significantly more injuries and possibly deaths. The use of a gun to ultimately subdue and kill the attacker is proof positive of the effectiveness of guns,” the statement concludes.
